port, dated the 9th ultimo, on the proceedings of the

International Opium Commission which you have recently

attended at Shanghai.

I have great pleasure in expressing to you the

high appreciation of His Majesty's Government at the

able manner in which you represented them on the Com-

mission, and in conveying to you their thanks for your

services which you were good enough to place at their

disposal on this occasion.
